The Charlotte Area public school system has over twenty (20) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) units in their high schools. An additional 19 JROTC Units at high school throughout the Charlotte Metropolitian Area including the "Upstate Area of South Carolina" are included in the Chapter's catchment area. The Chapter supports these units with medals and certificates each year for the outstanding cadet from each high school unit. In addition, we provide commissioning bars and certificates for two University level ROTC units at University of North Carolina Charlotte at graduating and commissioning ceremonies each year.
In 2013 the Chapter began initial plans for establishing a college scholarship fund for the purpose of awarding grants to deserving JROTC students going on to college and university studies. During 2014 the Chapter formally committed to establishing By-Laws and initial efforts to raising monies for this purpose. To this end the Chapter held it's first Golf Tournament as the major fund raiser. During 2015 and 2016 the Chapter raised well over $25,000 and awarded four $1,000 scholarships in 2016. In 2016 $10,000 will be awarded.
The scholarship committee has established legal and financial procedures to ensure that the scholarship efforts are in accordance with our by-laws, the directions of National MOAA and the Internal Revenue Service's declaration that the Charlotte-Metrolina Chapter is designated as a tax exempt organization under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) and as such is free to accept donations to further the ends of the scholarship program.
